Up the hill, not across town

Queen Anne is a great place to be a kid who plays music, and a rough place to drive out of at 4:30 on a weeknight. Between the Counterbalance, Aurora and the Mercer Mess, a trip to a studio can eat an hour for a 30-minute lesson. So we skip it. Your teacher comes to you, whether that’s a Craftsman off Queen Anne Ave or a condo down by Seattle Center.

Lessons that sound like your kid

Most lessons start with a method book. We start with the kid. Some want to learn the song they’ve had stuck in their head all week. Some want to make things up. Some actually want to read music. We work across five paths: reading music, improvising, chord charts, ear training and songwriting. Then we lean into whatever lights your kid up. We call it finding your musical fingerprint.

A neighborhood that already runs on music

KEXP broadcasts from the bottom of the hill, and on a clear night you can hear the city from Kerry Park. Our teachers are working Seattle musicians who play shows on the weekend and teach during the week, and they bring that into your living room.

If your kid quit lessons before

That’s usually a bad fit, not a lack of talent. The restless kid, the kid who plays by ear, the kid who’d rather write their own song: those are our favorite students.

Do we need a piano?

Not to start. A basic keyboard works, and your teacher will help you figure out what’s worth buying later.

How young can they start?

As young as 3.

Adults too?

Absolutely. Our students have ranged from 3 to 87.

How long are lessons?

30, 45, or 60 minutes, weekly.
