The neighborhood that raised our teachers

Ballard has always been a music neighborhood. On any weekend there’s a band at the Tractor or the Sunset, and a busker working the Sunday market crowd on Ballard Ave. A lot of Fingerprint teachers live here, so your kid’s teacher might be coming from a few blocks away, not across the city.

No studio, no waiting room

Your teacher comes to your house, sets up where your kid is comfortable, and teaches. No parking on Market Street, no sitting in a lobby with a phone for half an hour. Just music, right where you live.

Lessons that sound like your kid

Most lessons start with a method book. We start with the kid. We work across five paths: reading music, improvising, chord charts, ear training and songwriting. Some kids want to learn the song they’ve had on repeat. Some want to write their own. We follow what lights them up and build real skills around it. We call it finding your musical fingerprint.

If your kid quit lessons before

That’s usually a bad fit, not a lack of talent. The restless kid, the kid who plays by ear, the kid who’d rather start a band than practice scales: those are our favorite students.

How it works

Questions parents ask

Can my kid learn to play in a band?

Yes. Chord charts, playing by ear and improvising are core to how we teach, and they’re exactly what a kid needs to jam with friends.

Do we need a piano?

Not to start. A basic keyboard works, and your teacher will help you figure out what’s worth buying later.

How young can they start?

As young as 3.

How long are lessons?

30, 45, or 60 minutes, weekly.
